After a long day at work the first thing I do is wash my face and change into my sleepwear. I love nothing more than to wash off the day before settling in for the evening. I’ve never been one to skip on sleep and honestly can’t remember a time that I’ve ever stayed up all night. Since I am such a lover of my beauty sleep, I want to share with you how I go about relaxing before bedtime. It’s clear that in the world of constantly refreshing social media feeds, bright iPhone and iPad screens, and general stressors throughout the day can really temper with our sleep. I find that by unplugging and sticking to a nightly routine, I am able to quiet all that noise and sleep soundly. Here’s how I prepare for a good nights sleep:
Drink Tea: At about 8:30pm every night, I turn to my tea kettle and prepare some hot water. I enjoy a cup of tea while I finish watching a tv show. I feel comforted and warm while drinking my tea snuggled under a blanket! I try to always drink tea to wind down as opposed to wine since it tends to give me a headache. I recommend Sleepy Time tea to my friend as it wasn’t her favorite haha! But I like that one or Lemon Ginger tea before bed. There are so many options in the tea aisle at the grocery store so select a few and determine which you like best! (Be sure to opt for caffeine-free!)
Read a Book: After I finish my tea, I go upstairs and finish getting ready for bed. It’s from this point on that I commit to no longer check my phone. I plug it into the charger, set my alarm, and then put it away for the night. I am totally convinced that the light from the screen disables my mind from shutting down for bed! For this reason, I’ve never liked to read a book on my iPad. Rather, I prefer good old fashioned books that have pages. I am currently reading The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller. If I don’t have a specific book to read at the moment, I usually take a few minutes to read the upcoming passage for my morning devotional. After about 20-30 minutes of reading, I am usually fighting to keep my eyes open.
Use Lavender Essential Oils: One of my friends made me a “sleep” roller which contains lavender essential oils for Christmas. After I read, I turn off the light and apply this roller to my wrists and sometimes behind my ears. The smell is amazing and calms me immediately. It also forces me to take deep breaths, which, instantly relaxes my mind. By the time I do this and lay down… I am out. Very rarely do I toss and turn!
Sleep in Actual Sleepwear: This has become so important for me in recent years! Gone are the days of sleeping in my XL sorority t-shirt that tangles and bunches and ultimately isn’t meant to be slept in. I’ve invested in sleepwear and noticed a significant difference in how I feel when I am going to bed. You all know I like to feel put together and a few years back I had an epiphany and thought why am I not applying this to my sleepwear. Alas, I find that an investment in adorable yet comfortable sleepwear has helped me go to sleep and wake up confident. I never had this feeling when I went to sleep in my ratty t-shirt so I am convinced there’s a correlation there. This chemise from Violet Hour Fashion is hand-sewn in my hometown of Denver, extremely comfortably and my features my favorite color scheme.
My nightly routine allows me to avoid those sleepless nights! I’ve effectively found a way to shut my mind off and I am so thankful. I find myself waking up refreshed and ready to take on the day. I truly feel like committing to a beauty sleep routine should be as engrained in us as our skincare routine. Sleep is so important and I know I can’t live without a full 8 hours!
